Aperture controls the size of the pupil, if the pupil is small it allows you to see deep into the picture clearly and if it big it allows you to see the subject clearly but blurs the background. In the first picture the pupil is small and in the second picture the pupil is big because the background behind the ice is blurd. If it has a big hole it has a small f stop because it lets more light in the smaller the hole the begger the f stop because it lets less light in.
